Microsoft has released the beta of a new, free system recovery tool designed to deal with the most severe infections that leave computers unbootable. Some malware infections are so extreme that it renders the computer unusable by preventing Windows from starting or preventing anti-virus software to run and remove the infection. Under such cases the only option left is to format the hard drive and perform a clean install of Windows.
Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper hopes to offer reprieve to owners of such ailing PCs by enabling the computer to boot from a disk and then perform a full system scan to remove malware, viruses, trojans and worms. Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Beta is not a replacement for a full antivirus solution providing ongoing protection; it is meant to be used in situations where you cannot start your PC due to a virus or other malware infection.
Standalone System Sweeper Beta comes in 32-bit and 64-bit version, and can be downloadedMicrosoft Connect. The security solution then needs to be put on bootable CD, DVD or USB drive with at least 250 MB space.
Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Beta works with a range of platforms including Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7, including Windows 7 SP1.
